Aging & Family Services of Mineral County is proud to announce the 13th annual 5K fundraiser at Jennings Randolph Lake. This year we have made some slight changes. “Conquer the Dam” is one of the most scenic 5K’s in our area, but it does have one hill that can be quite a challenge. Due to construction, we must change the path in which our racers will be taking. In addition, we are offering a 3K walking option. Registration forms and costs will remain the same. Walkers will not be timed.

The highlight of this event remains that the runners and walkers will travel over the dam and spillway, which is normally closed to public travel. All participants will begin in the Shaw Beach area. Runners will take off going up Jennings Randolph Road towards the Howell Picnic Area (original starting line). Runners should circle the cone and reverse their route past the Howell Picnic Area, continuing past the Shaw Beach starting line.

After the downhill portion and passing the beach area, racers will come to a ranger’s station on their right. Runners will make the next right and continue this road past the station and the maintenance garage. After passing the maintenance garage to their right, racers will keep to the right and enter the dam. Racers should not enter the access road that goes off to the right below the dam. Racers should stay on the right side of the road unless passing walkers, then they should use the left side.

Racers will continue across the dam and then bear left across the spillway. After reaching the end of the spillway there will be a table with water on their right. Racers should circle the cone and reverse the route to the end. You should remain on the right side of the road until you pass the ranger’s station onto the main road. When returning to the Shaw Beach area finish line, racers should be on the right side of the road to avoid vehicular traffic. An official will obtain your bib number to verify the finish.

Walkers will begin by heading down Jennings Randolph Road after the start of the race as if following the original route. Walkers will come to a ranger’s station on their right. You will take the next right and continue this road past the station and the maintenance garage. After passing the maintenance garage to their right, walkers will keep to the right and enter the dam. Racers should not enter the access road that goes off to the right below the dam. Walkers should stay on the right side of the road in a single file (at max two people side by side) to ensure runners have room to get by.

Racers will continue across the dam and then bear left across the spillway. After reaching the end of the spillway there will be a table with water on their right. Racers should circle the cone and reverse the route to the end.

Walkers should be on the right side of the road and across the dam and spillway. When returning to the Shaw Beach area finish line, racers should be on the right side of the road to avoid vehicular traffic. An official will obtain your bib number to verify the finish, but you will not be timed.

Proceeds from this event support the Meals on Wheels program of Mineral County.
Meals on Wheels program is designed to bring hot nutritious meals to the home-bound elderly and to help prevent unnecessary and early institutionalization. Not only do they receive a delicious meal, but they also get a visit from a friendly worker who is there to check on their wellbeing. The delivery workers are sometimes the only social contact that the meal recipients have.
There have even been a few instances where our drivers have found that the client had fallen, and they were able to call 911 and wait with them until help arrived. This program is much more than just a meal delivery service. The meal recipients appreciate your support, especially at a time like this when family members cannot visit them as often. Join us in person at the lake or feel free to run virtually.
